SECTION B
Essay – 35 marks
Direction: Read the given passage
below and answer the questions that follow.
Southern Style
-
Kinga Dema
Brocade tego and woven kira
may be the rage in cooler places, but down south thin fabrics are not only
fashionable, but also help beat the heat.
So kiras and tegos are
stitched from the numerous choices woman have in shops across the border in
Jaigaon. The fabrics are either cotton, synthetic or mixed.
The garments are either
stitched in matching materials or colours. Florals are the most desired prints. Accordingly,
textile shops in Jaigaon, this summer, are overflowing with prints to choose
from. “The fabrics are perfect to beat the hot and humid weather,” said a
salesman.
While providing comfort,
these materials are far cheaper than the usual fare. Materials come cheap as Nu
40 a meter. The highest is about Nu 200 a meter.
These materials are also
easily washable and comes with numerous other benefits. Cotton clothing allows
better air circulation, which helps remove and absorb body moisture, drawing
heat away from the skin and keeping the body cool and dry.
Cotton is also hypoallergenic
and dust-mite resistant. Those, suffering from asthma or other allergies, fare
better with cotton. Those, with sensitive, are recommended to switch to cotton
too. For the heat, extremely light and water resistant, mixed fabrics are also
another good alternative.
Denesh Prashad Jaiswal, who
runs a textile shop called Matching Center in Jaigaon, said that in summer the
best texture is one that soaks sweat and gives you a cool feeling. “Cotton is
no doubt the best deal, but pure cotton tends to get wrinkled easily and needs
ironing after every wear.”
Another textile shop owner
said synthetic or other material, mixed with cotton, is also widely preferred
by the young and old alike. “it’s easy to handle and comfort as other fabrics.
However, if you are looking
out for some real cheap pocket friendly stuff, then you can also try out
polyester which of course doesn’t give you the same comfort as other fabrics.
Having worn only woven kiras
until her transfer to Phuentsholing about a year ago, Dechen, a corporate
employee, was quite hesitant in the beginning. “But, after a while, you get
used to such materials, and realise it’s more comfortable and cooler than the
woven kira, especially during summer.
Today, Dechen has a
collection of kira and tegos in bright colourful prints.
Although materials are light
and summery, some prefer to give it a formal touch, by stitching it into a
jacket style tego. To avoid rashes from heat and sweat, some prefer half kiras
with hook fastening at the sides.
